The judges were initially charmed by Malea Emma’s adorableness, but their amazement reached new heights when she began to sing.
At the start of Season 17 of American Idol, the long-awaited return of the show, the audience was treated to a rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner,” the national anthem of the United States. However, what followed was unexpected. As Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan stood to their feet with hands over hearts, a tiny seven-year-old named Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja took the stage.
Malea Emma had already gained online stardom after a memorable performance of the American National Anthem at a Major League Soccer match in September 2018. Following her standout performance, Malea Emma was interviewed by David Muir on ABC World News and even received an invitation to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, On Air with Ryan Seacrest. Seacrest was so impressed that he contacted the American Idol producers to alert them to this remarkable young talent.
The producers wasted no time in inviting Malea Emma and her parents to Idaho to audition for the judges at the show’s season premiere. While the judges found her adorable, their jaws dropped when she began to sing the National Anthem with confidence and power.
Dressed in a pretty flowery dress and a pink jacket, Malea Emma stood before the judges with poise, clearly no stranger to performing in front of crowds. She flawlessly sang the challenging song, effortlessly hitting the high notes towards the end. With impeccable control over her voice, she even added magnificent falsetto notes and a creative ending to the well-known anthem.
Judge Luke Bryan exclaimed, “A seven-year-old is outsinging us,” as the judges were left ecstatic by her performance. Impressed beyond measure, they awarded her a Golden Ticket, ensuring her a spot in Hollywood in 2027, as the minimum age for American Idol participants is 15.
Malea Emma, at just seven years old, is already on track to become an incredibly talented vocalist, with a Golden Ticket in hand. It’s clear that singing is her destiny!
